In Louisiana, do not leave your license plates on the donated vehicle. Remove all license plates before the tow. Afterward, either surrender the plates to the Office of Motor Vehicles or transfer them to another vehicle if you are eligible.
Keep the surrender or transfer receipt. It is your proof for cancelling the registration and may be needed before you can cancel insurance without penalties or flags.
What to do with your plates
Confirm the plate rule
Before the vehicle leaves, confirm that your plate type follows the standard donor rule: plates come off and stay with you. Standard plates, specialty plates, leased vehicles, or a plate you plan to transfer can have different handling. If anything is unclear, ask the Office of Motor Vehicles before pickup. Do not rely on the tow driver to decide plate handling.
Remove plates before tow
Take the plate or plates off the vehicle before handing over the keys. Check the rear plate area, the front bracket if one is installed, and any temporary or specialty plate. Keep the screws in an envelope or bag. If a plate is stuck, stripped, or damaged, take a photo and contact the Office of Motor Vehicles for the next step.
Surrender or transfer them
After pickup, either surrender the plates to the Office of Motor Vehicles or transfer them to your next vehicle if you are eligible. If you are transferring, make sure the transfer is processed before you treat the old registration as closed. If you are surrendering, use an OMV-accepted method and keep the proof you receive. Do not throw plates away unless OMV instructions allow it.
Keep the surrender receipt
Put the surrender receipt, transfer receipt, or plate cancellation proof with your donation records. This receipt is your proof for cancelling the registration tied to the donated vehicle. It is also sometimes a prerequisite to penalty-free insurance cancellation. If your insurer asks why coverage is ending, this receipt helps show that the plate and registration were handled.
File the transfer notice

Keep a copy of the submitted notice with your title paperwork, pickup paperwork, plate receipt, and insurance cancellation notes. These records help separate you from the vehicle after donation.
If the vehicle already left
If the tow already happened and the plate is still on the car, act quickly. Contact Bayou Rides Exchange and ask whether the plate can still be removed before the vehicle moves further through processing. If it cannot be recovered, contact the Office of Motor Vehicles for instructions on cancelling or reporting the plate. Do not assume the registration is closed just because the car is gone. Keep notes of who you contacted and what they told you.
Common questions
Can I cancel my insurance right after the tow?
Do not cancel only because the vehicle was picked up. First make sure the plate and registration are handled through the Office of Motor Vehicles. The surrender, transfer, or cancellation receipt is sometimes needed before insurance can be cancelled without penalties, flags, or proof problems.
Can I leave the plate in the glove box or trunk?
No. Remove the plate from the vehicle itself before the tow. Putting it inside the car can still leave you without control of the plate after pickup. Keep the plate with your records until you surrender it or complete an eligible transfer.
What if I want to use the plate on my next vehicle?
Ask the Office of Motor Vehicles whether your plate is eligible to transfer. If it is, follow their transfer process and keep the transfer receipt. If it is not eligible, surrender or cancel the plate as directed and keep that proof instead.
